A day at the Capital. Author Bev Gilliard has continuously supported causes for the rights of individuals impacted by violence. On this day, Author Bev Gilliard stands in support of Marcy's Law for Georgia at the Georgia Capital. With all the efforts of the supporters and advocates such as Author Bev Gilliard, Marcy's Law for Georgia was signed into Law in the State of Georgia on November 6, 2018. Marsy’s Law provides the following basic rights to crime victims: > The right to receive information about their rights and services available to crime victims. > The right to receive notification of proceedings and major developments in their criminal case. > The right to receive timely notification of changes to the offender’s custodial status. > The right to be present at court proceedings > The right to provide input to the prosecutor before a plea agreement is finalized > The right to be heard at plea or sentencing proceedings or any process that may result in the offender’s release > The right to restitution These fundamental rights will give victims equal protections within the legal system. > Georgia is one of only a handful of states that have no victims’ rights in the state constitution. > Marsy’s Law for Georgia won overwhelming support in the General Assembly earlier this year, passing both the House and Senate unanimously. Together, we can ensure that with the passing of Marsy's Law for Georgia, future individuals impacted by violence will not have to live in fear.
